Layers Panel

The Layers tab in the side panel. What it shows depends entirely on which scene is open, and that trips people up constantly.

In a Pro scene: the layer list

A Pro scene shows the stack of layers, newest work at the top:

Add New Layer at the top opens the list of layer types
undo and redo arrows sit beside it (Ctrl/Cmd+Z and Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+Z)
below them, every layer in the scene, drag to reorder

The order is the stacking order: a layer higher in the list covers the layers below it. That one rule answers most “why can’t I see my camera / my logo disappeared” questions — something above it is covering it. Drag it up or down to fix it.

On the Free plan the “Powered by evmux” watermark appears as the first row in the list.

The layer types you can add

Add New Layer lists, in this order:

Dynamic Grid — mimics the Dynamic Scene inside a Pro scene, so feeds like guests fill a designated area
Text — text with its own font, colour and size
Animated Caption — animated titles and subtitles
AI Generated Image — generate an image for a background or anything else
Media Files — videos, images and audio you have uploaded
Slideshow — a PDF or several images you move through like slides, and a guest can be given control of them
Web Source — a web page
Apps & Widgets — the evmux apps (where the account has them)
Speaker — a participant who joined the studio
Screenshare — a participant’s screen share
Media share — a participant’s own local video

The controls on a layer row

Each row has three controls on it, and no more:

an eye — hide or show the layer
a padlock — lock it, so it cannot be moved or resized by accident
a ⋮ (three dots) button — opens that layer’s menu

There is no trash icon on the row. Deleting happens in the ⋮ menu, as Remove from Scene — or by selecting the layer and pressing Delete or Backspace, which removes every selected layer at once. Right-clicking a layer opens the same ⋮ menu, so people who expect a context menu get one.

Clicking the layer’s name does not rename it — Rename is in that menu too.

Depending on the layer’s type, it offers: Animated Caption settings or Edit Text, Rename, Duplicate, Copy (to paste into another scene), Replace the source, Lock/Unlock, Show/Hide, Remove from Scene, and a row of colours for marking the layer so it is easy to spot in a long list.

Rename is offered on video, image, web source, app and animated-caption layers. Replace is offered where there is a source to swap — media, slideshow, screenshare and participant layers.

In the Dynamic Scene: accordions, not a list

The Dynamic Scene has no layer list and no Add New Layer button. Its Layers tab is a set of sections you open instead:

These are dedicated slots — the logo goes in the top-right corner, the background goes behind everything — and the participants arrange themselves automatically. If someone is hunting for Add New Layer and cannot find it, they are almost certainly in the Dynamic Scene: switch to a Pro scene, or build one.

In the Dynamic Scene the ⋮ menu on a feed is reduced to Remove from Scene — there is nothing to rename, lock or reorder there.

Answering questions about this panel

Talk about what the user sees — tab names, button labels, the eye and padlock icons — never CSS classes or element ids. Before explaining where a layer control is, work out which scene type they are in; the same question has two different answers.
