Session Management

Sessions are the individual broadcasts within a project. Each session can be a live stream, a recording, or a pre-recorded video streamed to one or more destinations.

Session types

The create-session dialog offers three tiles, but only two are genuinely different kinds of session:

  • Live Stream: “Using our studio to design and brand your live stream”
  • Recording: “Record in the studio”
  • Pre-Recorded video: “Upload your mp4 file and live stream it”

Live Stream / Recording: the same session

Both tiles create an identical studio session; picking “Recording” changes nothing about the session that is created. What decides whether a session streams or only records is its destinations, inside the studio:

  • At least one active destination → the header button reads Go Live and the session streams (and records too, if the Recording checkbox is ticked).
  • No active destination → the header button reads Record, recording is forced on and nothing is sent to any platform.

If you want to record without streaming you do not need a new session: switch your destinations off in the studio’s destinations popup and press Save.

Either way you get full studio access, guests and speakers, scenes and branding, cloud recording and local (ISO) recording.

Pre-Recorded Video

Genuinely different: upload an MP4 and have evmux stream it to your destinations at a scheduled time, with no studio and no live participants. Paid plans only.

On a free plan, choosing this tile shows an “Upgrade plan required” dialog: “Live streaming of pre-recorded videos is only supported on paid accounts.” with a View plans button.

Once uploaded, you can watch the pre-recorded video in the dashboard with a player that offers play/pause, a progress bar, volume and picture-in-picture.

Session details

Each session has:

  • A title and description
  • A scheduled start and end time, with a time zone
  • One or more streaming destinations
  • For pre-recorded sessions, the uploaded video

Destinations

A session can stream to several destinations at once. You set them up when you create the session and can edit them later from the studio’s destinations popup. See Streaming Destinations Reference.

Best practices

  1. Choose Live Stream or Pre-Recorded. The Recording tile is the same session as Live Stream; recording-only is a destinations choice made in the studio.
  2. Configure destinations before going live.
  3. Test pre-recorded videos before scheduling them.
  4. Check your plan limits. Pre-recorded streaming needs a paid plan.
  5. Schedule ahead to allow time for preparation.
