Layer Frames (Participant Frames)

Layer frames are decorative borders around participant layers: speakers, editors, guests, screen shares and media shares. A frame can be a still image or a video, such as an animated border.

Overview

What you can do with frames:

  • Set one default frame for the whole session
  • Give any layer its own frame, or no frame at all
  • Use image frames or video frames
  • Adjust the size and colour of a frame
  • Add your own frames from the gallery

Frame types

Image frames

Still borders. Use PNG or JPG files with transparency so the participant stays visible inside the frame.

Video frames

Animated borders. Use WEBM files with an alpha channel.

Video frames do not play on iOS. On iPhone and iPad only image frames are shown, so provide an image frame if you expect iOS viewers in the studio.

Choosing a frame for a layer

Select a participant layer and open the frame editor in the layer toolbar. It contains:

  • A Default button
  • A None button
  • A grid of frame thumbnails
  • An Add button
  • A Color slider
  • A Size slider

You have three choices for each layer:

  • Default uses the session’s default frame.
  • None removes the frame from this layer only.
  • Custom applies the frame you click in the grid.

Adjusting a frame

Colour

The Color slider rotates the hue of the frame, so one frame file can match different colour schemes. Not every frame looks good with its hue shifted, so check the result on the preview.

Size

The Size slider grows or shrinks the frame between -50% and +50%. Negative values pull the frame inward for an inner border; positive values push it outward.

Frames follow the layer’s crop. If you crop a participant, the frame moves with the cropped edges.

Reset to default

For frames provided by evmux you can reset the size and colour to their original values.

Linked to your brand

When frame settings are linked to your brand, changing the size or colour on a layer also updates the default frame for the session.

Adding new frames

  1. Click Add in the frame editor.
  2. The gallery opens. Only images and videos are offered.
  3. Pick an image or video asset.
  4. The frame appears in the frame grid and can be used on any layer.

Plan restrictions

Frames cannot be modified on the Free plan. If you try, evmux shows an upgrade prompt: “Frames can not be modified while using the Free plan”.

Best practices

  1. Use transparent files. PNG or WEBM with an alpha channel.
  2. Think about iOS. Provide an image fallback if you rely on video frames.
  3. Check hue changes. Not all frames look good with a shifted colour.
  4. Size with care. Use negative sizes for inner borders.
  5. Set the default wisely. The default frame applies to every participant.
