Test Internet Stability — checking your connection

evmux has a built-in connection check, and it is the right first step whenever someone reports a stream that is laggy, choppy, freezing, dropping out or disconnecting.

Where it is

There are two ways in, and both open the test in a new browser tab:

  • Before entering the studio — on the entry page, just below the “Enter the Studio” button, there is a Test Internet Stability link. This is the useful one when someone cannot get in at all, or wants to check before a show
  • Inside the studio — the profile menu in the header (behind your name) has Test Internet Stability as well

The check looks at the stability of the connection to evmux — packet loss, not just raw speed. Streaming suffers far more from an unstable connection that loses packets than from a merely slow one, which is why a user who “has fast internet” can still have a bad stream.

When to reach for it

  • the stream is choppy, laggy or freezing for viewers
  • guests keep dropping out or reconnecting
  • the studio will not finish loading
  • before an important broadcast, on an unfamiliar network

What it does not test

It checks the user’s own connection to evmux. It says nothing about whether YouTube or Facebook is accepting the stream, and it does not verify a custom RTMP URL or stream key — nothing in evmux verifies those before going live. If one specific destination fails while the others are fine, that is a destination problem, not a connection problem.

Answering these

When someone reports lag, dropouts or an unstable stream, point them at Test Internet Stability and say where it is — under the Enter the Studio button on the way in, or in the profile menu once inside. Do not tell them to run an external speed test instead; evmux has its own check, and it measures the thing that actually matters for streaming.
