Stingers and Transitions

Stingers and transitions provide professional scene switching effects in evmux. A stinger is a video overlay that plays during scene changes, while transitions are built-in animations.

Overview

When switching scenes during a live broadcast, you can:

  1. Use no transition (default fade)
  2. Apply a built-in transition effect
  3. Play a video stinger with a cue point

Video Stingers

System Stingers (Pre-built)

evmux ships with 8 ready-made stinger videos. They are muted, play at normal speed, and each comes with a preset cue point.

Custom Stinger Requirements

When uploading custom stingers:

RequirementLimit
File FormatWEBM only (VP8/VP9 codec)
Max File Size8 MB
Max Duration8 seconds
Max Width1920px (landscape) / 1080px (portrait)
Max Height1080px (landscape) / 1920px (portrait)
Gallery VideosMax 15 seconds

Cue Point

The cue point is the exact time in the stinger video when the scene should switch. Set it to the moment the stinger fully covers the screen.

Default cue point: If you do not set one, the scene switches at the middle of the video.

Your Uploaded Stingers

Stingers you upload appear under My Uploads. evmux remembers the cue point, mute setting, volume and playback speed you saved for each one, and keeps them in the order you arranged.

Default Transition

If no stinger or transition is selected, scenes switch with a fade-in effect. This option is shown as “Default [Fade In]”.

Setting a Stinger on a Scene

Each Pro scene can have its own stinger or transition:

  1. Right-click the scene in the Scenes panel.
  2. Select Set Stinger.
  3. Choose a source:
    • My Uploads - Your uploaded stinger videos
    • System Stingers - The 8 pre-built stingers
    • Default [Fade In] - No stinger
    • Upload - Add a new stinger from disk
    • Add from Gallery - Browse videos already in your media library
  4. Pick a built-in transition to apply it immediately, or pick a video stinger to open its settings.
  5. For a video stinger, configure it:
    • Preview the video with the play/pause controls
    • Drag the marker on the timeline to set the cue point
    • Tick or untick Use audio track
    • Watch the duration display (elapsed / total) and the scene transition preview, which shows “1 scene” and “2 scene” to indicate the switch
  6. Save.

Stinger Audio

A stinger’s volume follows the master volume of the studio: lowering the master volume also lowers the stinger. Untick Use audio track to play a stinger silently.

If a Stinger Gets Stuck

If a stinger video cannot play through to its cue point (for example, it fails to load), evmux switches to the new scene anyway after about 1.5 seconds, so a broken stinger never blocks your broadcast.

Best Practices

  1. Set accurate cue points - When the stinger fully covers the screen
  2. Keep stingers short - 2-4 seconds is ideal
  3. Use WebM with alpha - For overlay stingers that don’t fully cover the screen
  4. Match branding - Consistent with your show style
  5. Test before going live - Preview transitions in the studio
  6. Mute if needed - Some stingers work better silent
  7. Use built-in transitions - For quick, simple, no-video transitions
  8. Use video stingers - For branded, custom, animated effects
